In a whirlwind through Vienna Nighteen thirty two Three weeks on the continent Spent two of them with you Held hands between the streetcars Hummed operatic tunes We kissed behind the ferris wheel Under crescent paper moon Paper moon, paper moon Photographed with you Camera flash left us starry eyed But I had to leave too soon Remember me, indefinitely By that paper moon In a letter to San Francisco Nineteen thirty eight Dark sky gone red and black Been dreaming of escape But the doorways west were closing And you had to get out soon So you made your way to Prague by night By the light of a paper moon Paper moon, paper moon A photograph of two Torn edges in a canvas bag All the fire around you Remember me, indefinitely By that paper moon In a camp by the border Nineteen forty five Broke down walls, apocalypse You were somehow still alive Got food where we could find it Scrap paper, a rented room Back to life under West German skies Woke up to a paper moon Paper moon, paper moon Bless reunions overdue Blinded by the sunlight Tell the past, we're done, it's through But whenever darkness falls again There's a dimly lit paper moon

Lest we forget The struggles gone through A future uncertain Is certainly not new Sustained by the feed There's no need for food It's a race to the trough No need for truth How might you make it better? In this space, In this moment, In this breath When you wanna scream Fill your lungs deep Hear your heartbeat Try to observe The source of the anger And picture yourself In the shoes of your foes I will admit To some struggles with rage I turn to forgiveness To help turn the page How might you make it better? In this space, In this moment, In this breath When you wanna scream Fill your lungs deep Hear your heartbeat Try to observe The infinite wonder Within the fact That we exist at all How might you gonna make it better? In this space, In this moment, In this breath When you wanna scream

She said: I don't walk alone after hours. After hours, I call a cab. I never put much stock In higher powers. Higher powers. I never have. So take your "dreams" and take your "peace" I can't "imagine" this away. And I sure hope hell is real, 'Cause that's the only place he'll pay. "Love" is not a place to hide. When the door swings open, "Love" is the creak. And I promise I have tried, "Love" is not a place to hide. When the door swings open, "Love" is the creak. She feels embarrassed in the restaurant. She shivers when she puts her stockings on. And just when she feels like she's healing, She sees his face on TV and starts feeling 'I'll never be safe again'. Her friends say, "I love you" She says "I know, but- "Love" is not a place to hide. When the door swings open, "Love" is the creak. And I promise I have tried, "Love" is not a place to hide. When the door swings open, "Love" is the creak.

When the dust settles, gonna wake up and see This experiment they call it, this democracy Was unstable, a volcano that’s been bubbling and the surface calm helped steer us wrong while we were asleep Asleep When the dust settles, gonna wake up and find That they played us like those dolls that rest in dolls of a kind That our center’s small and hardened so we’re doomed to rewind Pray that progress moves in helixes and not in straight lines Can you feel the ground move beneath your feet? Foundations are crumbling, worlds are toppling.

Give my best to momma, you know I’ll miss her Kiss her goodbye for me I’m heading out of town I’ve heard that there are mountains beyond mountains Purple giants smiling with cloudy crowns Freedom is a long road with the apple of your eye It’s a warm lavender sky above your head Freedom means that all through thick and thin You can love the shoes you’re standing in Drive through mississippi in the morning, mourning something lost there We walk the empty streets I think progress had to leave here, couldn’t be here anymore It took a train back east Freedom is a long road with the chance to say hello And the choice to say goodbye, all the same Freedom means that all through thick and thin You can keep the shoes you’re standing in Maybe highways Are like airways For the runaways like me Oh my country Won’t you see me I feel empty I’m running on empty Made it to the valley, watched the sunrise Tired eyes wild but open I swear I thought of you Momma, sunshine looks the same here But I came here for something new Maybe you will too Freedom is a long road from the place where all is lost To the place where lost are welcome to be found Freedom means that all through thick and thin You stand tall in shoes you’re standing in

I packed my bags, and I got on a train Rode it down to the New York Bay Got off at Harlem, guitar in my hand Took a subway to the promised lands To New York I must go From the place I used to know The rest of my friends they got on a plane To go get the rest of their lives ordained I miss the places we used to go With the streetlamp's light, and its orange glow From New York I will come To the place I started from I've seen protests, but pretty things too Seen people marching down fifth avenue Seen people stand, watching others fall Then stampeding through a shopping mall From New York I will come Like a bird from the rising sun From New York will I be To the place I long to see

You see what you want to, and I see what you are. You hear what you want to, but I speak from the heart. You say you are here to stay and I must go away. This you know - you told me so - so why are you afraid? I say I don’t need you. It’s your fault that we stay divided. You and I, we could listen, and maybe only then be united. You and I will fall away no matter what we say. This I know - I told you so - so why am I afraid? I don’t want to hear it anymore cause I don’t need to like you like before. You and I could listen but we won’t. So we’re gonna fight until we don’t. Time is relentless. You’d think if we spent less time wasting time that we’d find we wasted our time.
